freshwater is the limiting system at 13/9.2/2.4 gal per day.

Short answer

An RV black tank often lasts four to ten days, but the range changes quickly with people and flush volume. A 30 gallon black tank may last about twelve days for one conservative traveler, about seven days for a couple using normal habits, or about three to four days for a family of four.

Why black tank math is separate

Black tank output is mostly toilet use. It does not rise as fast as gray water when someone showers, but it can become the hard limit when dump stations are scarce. Treat the black tank as its own system, not a leftover percentage of freshwater.

Practical planning buffer

Round the calculator result down. If the output says 5.8 days, plan for five. Tank monitors are notoriously imperfect, and a partial dump is not always available where you camp.

FAQ

Can I extend black tank days with less water per flush?

Yes, but do not starve the tank of water. Too little liquid can cause buildup and odors.

Does toilet paper change the calculation?

It does not change gallons much, but it can change how safely you can wait before dumping.
